In theory, it should not be my job to retape damaged or leaking packages.
In reality, if I dont want ten pounds of styrofoam peanuts or 2 reams of copy paper or 40 pounds of dog food all over the floor of the package compartment then I had better be willing to retape the occasional box.
UPS gives me a tape gun and pays me $36 an hour plus bennies. So I will use the tape gun.

Is the dog food not in a bag in the box?

I’ve delivered lots of dog food laying on top of pieces of a box.

It’s also 10x easier to maneuver boxes that are taped than trying to haul ripped up boxes and looking like dumb@ss. But that’s just me

Yes. Common practice on damages. Your fine.

The clerk will inspect the package for damage and determine the correct coding. They just don’t want customers freaking out that there package is damaged if the contents are fine and just needs retapped or reboxed
I always sheet damages as missed. It’s been like that for years.

I got angry all over again just typing up my diatribe. I know the house, the address and remember the woman. Pretty sure she remembers me too. I went to the same house for a pick up and she handed me an open box, I gave it back to her and said, "I do not carry tape, if you want it to get to where it is going, tape it up" and I gave it back to her. She threw it at me and told me to take it. I left it on the lawn and it was still there the next day when I marked the call tag "NR2." It was not on my car for day 3.
