Another group has the holy spirit more like a teacher who brings understanding through the word of God. Renewing the mind and changing it from darkness to light.
"Convict the world" does not mean the apostles only.

The "promise" here is to the Apostles of the HS coming.
"How" does the HS convict the world?
My contention is through the Word which the Apostles by direct inspiration of the HS were able to write it.

The Bible says when the word is competed these things will end. 1 Corinthians 13:10

Men could not have known the things of God unless the HolySpirit of God had revealed them to men. The Spirit revealed the things of God to men in the first century and they preached the gospel (cf. 1 Cor. 2:9-13; 1 Pet. 1:12).

The New Testament was in the process of being written in the first century. The wonders, miracles and signs that were done confirmed the truth of the message. Mark 16:20 says, "And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following." We learn from Hebrews 2:3-4 that the "great salvation" first began to be spoken by the Lord "and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will."

The power given by the Holy Spirit to perform miracles confirmed the message being taught, once the message was written, miracles ceased.

The Spirit of God enlightens and converts sinners; comforts and strengthens Christians; that love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness; meekness, fidelity, self-control, are all the fruit of the Spirit.

We learn none of this from inner consciousness, but from the Word of God. The how is the Word of God . Independent of the Word we could never know 'whether there be any Holy Spirit.

There is no "personal indwelling". There is only one Holy Spirit, just as there is one Jesus and God.
The dwelling is representably.

No doubt. .."If anyone speaks, he should speak as one conveying the words of God." 1 Peter 1:11 -- Not much of that happening today for sure.

Some think that Peter meant of Paul's writing that hard to understand was also hard to accept by the Jewish Christian of the first century. At times, Paul had to explain the differences between the law of Moses and the law of Christ to fleshly Israelites who were rooted in traditions and customs which often contradicted the very law which they claimed to observe.
They were so "high minded" because of the advantages which they had over the Gentiles, that they failed to benefit from those advantages (Rom. 3:1,2; 9:4,5). The Jew was so busy excluding the Gentile that he (the Jew) denied himself of those promises to be found in Christ and the gospel of the new covenant.
Peter said there were "some things" hard to be understood, not all things. And the ones who wrested these things were unlearned and unstable readers who did the same thing with other Scriptures.
