Here's the latest technology upgrade....
My starter went on Friday, brand new truck with 8000 miles on it and this is the second time.So finally, after the mechanic tries to have me repair the truck he does come out and we have a little conversation while off loading. Talk got around to all the money UPS is investing in new technology and guess what's coming next,in the very near future? Cameras AND sound INSIDE the cab of the package cars.If you think I'm kidding you and you have one of those flat screen backup monitors already, take a look at the bottom left hand corner of it. That little pinhole is a camera, already wired. They're just waiting on some sort of box to install that transmits sound and picture back to our centers.
Nice, huh?!!! Now,when you get cut off,I wouldn't advise flipping the person off or muttering a few unkind words. Wanna pick your nose?....better run in the back! Answer your cell phone?...don't even think about it!
All joking aside, this is going too far. There's not a single reason these cameras are necessary, not one. And don't give me this safety bullsh&t either. It's purely for intimidation and harassment. Plain and simple.
Lets say you have an accident,(errrr,I mean CRASH). Guess what? You say you made eye contact? You beeped your horn? Let's go to the video tape! Oooooops, guess what? They will find something, anything, that disputes your account, and then let the games begin.
No longer do we work for a company that appreciates hard work and effort to do the right thing on a daily basis. Instead we work for a corporation with only profits and it's stockholders as their only concerns. The faster they can get rid of you,the faster they can hire a new guy at 1/3 your rate for a year or two and sooner or later seniority drivers will be a thing of the past. It will be a vicious cycle, and the companies reputation is what will suffer the most.
Personally,I have about 9-10 years left and know if I do make it,I will consider myself fortunate. But I often look around at guys who've only been around full time 6,7,8 years and think to myself "no way in hell they'll last another 20". Sad what this company is becoming.
