Local company faces $320K fine in worker death – Courier Journal

Material Handling Systems of Louisville faces proposed fines of $320,400 for safety violations after one of its employees died in a fatal fall in Addison, Ill.

The 42-year-old Illinois man was dismantling equipment at a United Parcel Service facility when he accidentally fell 22 feet. Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration authorities opened an investigation into MHS and MHS Technical Services, which were working under a multi-million contract with UPS to dismantle conveyor systems and install new, high-speed conveyors.

Similar upgrades are planned as UPS expands its Centennial package handling facility in south Louisville.

UPS could invest millions in upgrades at Mesquite facility – Mesquite News

The Mesquite City Council on Monday approved an incentive agreement to allow for the expansion and modernization of the United Parcel Service (UPS) facility at 4200 Samuell Blvd. UPS has been in Mesquite since the early 1980s.

“They have been in this community for almost 35 years and are a major engine to our economy,” said Tom Palmer, Mesquite Economic Development director. “They have been a major employer. They have up to 2,500 workers.”

Rising revenue boosts UPS profit; 2016 forecast confirmed

United Parcel Service Inc reported a higher quarterly net profit on Friday that met analyst expectations as revenue grew across its business units, and the company reaffirmed its full-year earnings outlook despite global economic uncertainty.

Chief Executive David Abney told Reuters UPS is adding capacity to its network and will work more closely with retailers ahead of this year’s crucial holiday peak season.

The company had put in a solid a performance during the 2015 peak season after two years of struggling to handle holiday demand and the costs associated with it.

UPS plans $105 million expansion at its Lexington operation

Atlanta-based United Parcel Service is planning a $105 million expansion at its Lexington hub.

On Thursday, the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority approved offering up to UPS up to $500,000 in tax incentives for the expansion.

By expanding its building and installing additional sorting automation, the UPS facility on Mercer Road would be able to sort up to 43,000 pieces per hour.
