I would say do your best to explain in simple terms. They can probably understand intellectually but not really grasp the deeper meanings of what is happening.

Telling them "he is in a better place" is not going to cut it.

Order a pizza, turn off the TV, make them turn off their devices and have a honest discussion with them. You don't have to go in to detail about the nature of his illness but do stress that he was in little to no pain when he did pass, whether that is the truth or not. Ask each of them to describe one of their favorite moments with Pop Pop. You may also ask them if they would like to each select something small that they would like to put in his casket.

My mother (my Mom) passed away when I was a freshman in college. My father (not my Dad) could not have handled it any more poorly. He sent my uncle to pick me up from school and then made me go in to the viewing room by myself. My brother had it much worse-----he had to fly back from S. Korea for the funeral. Have I mentioned that my father was an a hole?
