Here too. I'm not sure when they started doing more to finish the basements. Maybe houses built after WW2.
The pre 1900 homes didn't have much down there so they were shallow and dirt. Same with summer homes that were converted later on to year round after WW2.

Most I have seen like that around here were built in the late 1800's. I wasn't sure when it changed but houses built in 1950's and later definitely had finished basements.

My brother-in-law has a house built in late 1860's. 2nd oldest house in a little town. He had to pretty much gut it to bring everything up to code but you can still see how different they built houses back then.
