$20 a hour.

Interesting to see what will happen? More flex-scheduling to keep employment numbers down, contract out some of the jobs, close down off peak hours, automation, higher prices?

Panera interesting enough, is exempt from the law. What fool will continue to work there when yo can go to the place across the street and make a whole lot more?

The State of California was no longer willing to provide corporate subsidies in the form of public assistance to low wage earners.
When the low wage spotlight was shined on Walmart it was only then that they decided to finally do something about it. But, in the end Walmart prospered to the point that it was able to do a stock split.

Will it work in California? We'll see. If it does expect to see other states take a similar approach.

That's a big part of the problem. These companies pay low and get the employees on the government welfare. You can work full time at Walmart and not even make 40k for the year, with crappy benefits.

“Pizza Hut was my career for nearly a decade and with little to no notice it was taken away,” Ojeda said, whose story was recently highlighted by the Wall Street Journal.
Delivering pizza is fine for a teenager, someone going to college, or supplementing your income. It's not a career.

Between market forces of Amazon, and gig workers like Doordash...
And economic downturn, plus automation potentially gutting the union...
And Carol being Carol, and gutting the company, declaring war on the union, and doing her usual property liquidations at real estate market peak...

Maybe delivering packages won't be a career anymore.

As a lifelong resident of California It is my observation that is not true at all.

California is very generous with handing out free healthcare and section 8 housing vouchers.

Maybe the increased minimum wage is part of an overall effort to at least slow the increase in the demand for publicly funded services. There is only so much money to go around for public services and so perhaps California is trying to find a way to boost incomes to above the threshold for eligibility.
