Diesel fuel shortage: Why is no one talking about this?

It doesn't use more energy as it's a fuel, but you get less energy out of it when burning it. It does have a substantially higher octane rating and engines designed for it burn cleaner while making more power. The cost of ethanol without government subsidies is about equal with gasoline and since you're only getting 2/3 the mileage and it uses our corn crop to do it, you're right that overall the environmental impact is such that it is not a viable alternative to regular gasoline.
You have to add in all the energy used to produce the alcohol.

One of the by-products of oil refining is petroleum coke, also known as ‘coke’ or ‘petcoke.’ With over 80 percent carbon, petroleum coke is essential to manufacturing fertilizer, where it undergoes a gasification process to create ammonia and urea ammonium nitrate. This is then used to create nitrogen fertilizers. The Future of Fertilizer.
I didn't know fertilizer was made from oil.

Marine Traffic currently shows 4 oil tankers and two other ships waiting at anchorage outside of Boston Harbor.
Normally its maybe 1 or 2.

The other two ships are bulk carriers, full of road salt.
There is one already unloading and these two have to wait for it to finish.

There's an ethanol plant at the other end of town . Ethanol is only it's second or third largest product. Cooking oil is it's money maker. It takes around 140,000 bushels of corn to run it for one shift. The energy conversion factor is about 1.65-1 It does create more energy than it consumes. Not a great deal more but still on the positive side nevertheless and ethanol can and is used to clean up dirty gasoline.

Now if only you guys were open mined enough to look at the broader issue you would only have to look at this weeks earnings disclosures from Big Oil, you would be absolutely floored at what you read. Marathon made 6 times more money in this past quarter than it did in the same quarter last year and will raise it's dividend by 200% BP made more than twice as much money in the past quarter than it did in the entire previous year and announced plans to cut it's oil and gas output by 40% by 2030 and Aramco's earnings were up 39%.

Now right now here in this region alone we've got an ocean of shut in gas and we've got the EU loaded up with enough to last the entire year. Now you have to wonder just how much shut in crude oil do we actually have here in the states.

Oh and BTW did you bother to look at Ford's report earlier this week? Car sales overall were down 10% but it's EV sales were UP 120%.
