Nothing you can do until you're in the union.
They do it all the time. HR will tell prospective hires whatever they think he or she wants to hear. They would never be able to get enough people for peak, otherwise.
The union wants some of the money you earned before you go. Personally, I think $25/week is criminal for seasonal and probationary employees (that's the way it is here), but it is what it is.
