That's a question that would be hard to answer in the 1860's because it was so ingrained in the culture. But that the Union prevailed says to me that the right side won. It's just a shame that a lot of good people had to die to get us out of slavery.

The Bolsheviks won in 1917, did that tell you it was the right thing too. Considering how many innocent people died after that, I’d say no. The wheel of history is enormous, we can’t always judge it in a generation or two. To think otherwise is vanity.

But to answer your question, yes I do. To be bound to one location, being talked to as if you are owned, whipped across the back if you don't jump to it, living in a shack with threadbare c!othes while the master lives in the big mansion, not being able to read or write, basically being kept like a mule for labor, having your children taken from you and sold to others, yeah, they are much better off today.

If the civil war was about slavery, it wouldn't have been fought.
