It doesn't scale as a business model in a place without population density. The US doesn't have that density. It adds significantly to the cost of the car and the switching stations.
People in dense cities need it because they don't have home charging or can't adapt as easily to it. The vast majority of Americans would never need the ability because they can charge at home. It would be a wasted, very expensive feature.
I do a ton of road trips of 3 to 10 hours for long weekends, and I use public charging stations maybe 5 to 10 times per year. This really isn't a thing that people need or want.
I didn't even know how to use a charging station until I'd owned it for a year.
