If they are violating the contract it is a HUGE DEAL!

There was no indication of a contract violation. If the local the OP is in allows a start time change this small with this small of a window, then there is no violation. If the contract does not allow the company to change on such short notice, then the 15 min later is just an ask. Anyone who shows up at start time can work, anyone who shows up 15 min later won't be disciplined.

The only reason as has been mentioned for a Twilight or Local sort for doing this would be a hiccup in the network that is expected to disrupt volume availability. In those cases it is incumbent on the local management to attempt to avoid a situation where an entire sort is being paid to wait around for volume to show up. Is 15 min a big deal? No, times one employee, it is not. Times a 40 or 100 employee sort, well, now it is getting a tad more serious. Were the attitude of "oh what the heck, just pay everyone extra to stand around when the unforeseen pops up" to be adopted company wide and no attempt to control extraneous costs were ever taken, this company would be in the red within a year. Which is why UPS has the opposite attitude. And I get that attitude sucks for employees (and a lot of management as well) but that is the reality of the situation.

ummm, the OP said they were asking to start 15 min later, not earlier. Did you notice everyone of your inconveniences were about an earlier start time?

Ummmmm no.

Plans are made ahead of time especially when you have a family or work two jobs. The first scenario was my wife would have canceled meeting on Friday or early monday because at that time I had to be at work 15min early. Now that it's 15 min later it was all for nothing and she now has been inconvenience twice by my work schedule. I don't know how your work is but my wife has meetings scheduled days out.

The dog I usually take for a long walk before work. Then come home and get ready. His walk was cut short because I was under the impression that I would be starting at a certain time. Then I was informed that my start time has been changed to 15 minutes later. Well It takes time to put his harness back on and get him ready to take out. So I can't just walk back out the door with him.

I informed my second job on Friday that I couldn't work past 1600 on monday because I had to be at work at 1630. My boss having already gotten the information would have scheduled another person to cover for me for that 15 minutes. He cant just tell the other employee. "Oh nevermind we dont need you anymore. You can go home because 542 now can work his normal shift."

Point being people make plans and live different lives. UPS is already pretty hard to plan around as it is. Your scheduled start time is different everyday and your clock out time is different everyday. I don't think it's asking to much to have some form of reliability of your schedule.

Ok I get it. ( Although I gotta say the dog argument is weak sauce IMHO)

And I agree it's not asking too much to have a schedule one can plan around. It sucks when last minute changes disrupt things.

I would mention though that this is all from the point of view of The employee and family. The company also has a point of view. UPS works in an industry with a lot of constantly changing variables and has to be able to adjust quickly to keep up with unforeseen changes. When I ran a Saturday air operation I would some mornings get notified the aircraft was late and I would have no volume to process at start time. Contractually it was much too late to change drivers start - but of course I had to ask. I'd send out a text with a new start time - most drivers would take the extra time. Some would come in and I'd put them on the clock as was their right. Now I get my little corner of the UPS world was not going to make or break the company. But if the attitude you seem to be suggesting that when the unforeseen happens management should just stick to the script and not even attempt last minute adjustments to curb waste that's a different story.

Yes it sucks when schedules change. But remember the harder it is for UPS to adjust a schedule the less adaptable the company is. And that translates to being less able to keep up with the non Union competition.

Cool story bro

But

All that needs to be negotiated, because we both know UPS will bastardize the hell out of this

Yeah I agree the dog excuse was weak. ;) I only said it because I always take my dog on a walk for a hour before work. Was really just trying to point out people have plans or routines.

I'm not saying things don't happen. I understand they do. The problem is with UPS there always seems to be a late trailer or late plane. If you allow it once or twice all of a sudden you're getting new start times 2 or 3 times a week.

No one said it doesn't need to be negotiated.

I'm merely trying to point out there are reasons why UPS tries to get as much flexibility in those negotiations as it can. And that reason is not just to screw with people like so many on this site want to believe.

And thank you for the validation bro, it is a cool story!

So we had a posted schedule Friday night, start time 1630. Today (Monday) several of us get a text saying start time is now 1645. What's everyone's thoughts on this and what does the contract say?

LoC

how long before start time? If I recall correctly there is some time limit on how long before they can change the start time and there is a provision giving time and a half to all work performed before posted start time.
