State of Emergency in Virginia

In the book 1984, one of Orwell’s characters warns of how “every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street and building has been renamed, every date has been altered.”

“And that process is continuing day by day and minute by minute,” adds Orwell’s character. “History has stopped.”

Is that what we want?

The above is from an article today by Seth Lipsky.
To the victor goes the spoils. The north won the war......I mean Christ everyone thinks the war was about Slavery.

What do you think it was about?
Mostly states rights vs large federal government

Lincoln made it about slavery 2 years into the war when the general public was beginning to get weary of the war and why they were fighting it. Slavery was was a polarizing subject that got the support of the general public.

If abolishing slavery was so important why did the emancipation proclamation only free slaves in confederate states?

Slavery was in the declarations of succession for every southern state.

Lincoln's primary goal was keeping the Union intact. He said if he could do that without freeing any slaves he would, if he could do that freeing all slaves he would, if he could do it freeing some slaves he would.

So I somewhat agree with you, I don't think Lincoln cared about slavery beyond political realities of the time, but it's disingenuous to claim the civil war wasn't about slavery.

I won't say it wasn't about it all but the issues were so much deeper. why did the south want slavery?

They needed Slavery to run their economy. The north conveniently became against slavery only after their economy became advanced enough that they were no longer needed.

I mean look at the social and economic divide we still have between north and south....if it was solely a slavery issue that would of died a long time ago.

There were slaves in Massachusetts as late as 1822 and you are correct that Yankees could not use slaves as the work was of an Industrial nature which requires synchronized activities and literacy.
This is why 'the 3R's of schooling' started in the North and really did not reach into the South until the 1920's or so.

Now, this is where I go tangential and declare that the Norther Industrialists did want slaves in the South because it reduced the cost of the raw materials the South were forced to sell to Northern States only.
The use of anti-export tariffs effectively made the South a colony of the Northern Industrialists.

Of course they wanted them. That's why Lincoln was perfectly happy allowing slaves until he had to use freeing them as a political ploy to convince the general public that the war was worth fighting.

And Lincoln's solution to the slave's in the South until 1863-64 was to ship them off to Haiti.
Liberia worked out much better.

Which is why the more educated and critical thinking AAs don't hold Lincoln in a very high esteem.
Lincoln was adamantly opposed to slavery but he was even more politically savvy.

No liberals say that. That's just your conservative persecution complex. You're a racist if you defend the confederacy and celebrate its leaders. The confederacy fought the government so they could own black people, that's as racist as it gets.

but not a racist if you promote black pride and call anyone who celebrates white pride a racist?
