I'm talking with a friend of mine and he says if you take the buyout he can continue to work until Oct 31st when his pension paperwork will be ready. My understanding is if you take it your employment is terminated immediately.

You can still back out up until July 31. After that, there is no backing out but you continue to work until the separation date. And I believe UPS decides on that, although like @Johney said, they may work with you on the particular date.
