At 2500 a pop for the driver and 10k for the employer.......Yes---is ANY government agency concerned with collecting those fines? ABSOLUTELY
Then why hasnt this happen In California , again we have been doing this and nobody has gotten fined

so go ahead and rat out a guy who does it , like it bothers you or your day but then again most drivers are like a bunch of women in a office

If the DOT stops you on lunch, just say you are on break or just sorting and take the lunch later. There are ways around this and big brown will turn the other cheek.
That works in THEORY....say they observe you in the car for ten minutes of the 30 minutes you record for lunch......they never say a word to YOU on area.....they request your records from UPS---it shows your 30 minute meal while DOT was observing you.......FINES LEVIED----then termination for lying about your meal period(working off the clock)---DONT RISK IT!

Hell we even have RAT BASTARDS that go to management and say shizz like..."look what a GREAT job I do for you....the fill in can't even compare---S C U M B A G!

Like over9five stated "Ain't MY brother if he's breaking the law." I won't hesitate to file a grievance against UPS for not enforcing this rule and I won't hesitate to call the DOT and report violations.

Package Car is cake compared to this...
Dracula, in the end, thats my business if I chooseto do so (the thought has crossedmy mind so I am waayyy more selective in when I will use it, especially when I think I need to work Saturday, and then realize if take my lunch there's my Saturday right there).

I can't understand how people can blow oogles of money gambling or smoking, but they have the right to spend that money as they choose. However, unlike those engaging in those activities which affect many others who are not directly involved but cannot avoid being affected, sorting on one's own time doesn't have to affect ANYONE else, provided, ironically, if they follow Over's advice and grow a pair. Learn to fight your own battles; I didn't always fight the battles for my fleshly siblings, nor my spiritual ones. Why must I be dragged into yours?

Because it affects all of the drivers next to you/ If everyone skips their lunches, that time adds up. That is bargaining work being done for free. If enough people do this, it takes away work from others. This is why grievances are filed when ignorant drivers sort through their trucks before their start time, That is also bargaining work, and thus, should be available to the highest seniority person. Working for free affects everyone around you in one way or another.

Hope you do your job perfectly.

Doing your job perfectly has NOTHING to do with it---That's a threat a MANAGER would TRY----If you friend up bad enough do you think that saying" I skipped my lunch all these years for you guys" would get you your job back?------If you do you've been sipping the KOOL-AIDE my friend!

Do realky think DOT is even worried about pkg car driver , there is plenty of big rigs out there to go after

Yeah a bunch of automotive management in New York thought the same thing. What was that fine again? One point how many million dollars?

The cover guys in my center put up better numbers on routes than most of the bid drivers.

DS, I am not suggesting that drivers should sort their package cars while on lunch. Lunch is meant to be a break from work; however, if an adult decides the he/she wants to spend their lunch break sorting their package cars then that should be their choice.
No it shouldn't be, and it isn't their choice. Lunch BREAK. The meaning of BREAK. STOP WORKING. The law is clear. NOT WORKING during the 30 minutes. The adult had the CHOICE of applying for work at UPS. The rules/contract/laws regarding this is now so clearthat even a child can understand it. STOP WORKING for 30 minutes. WTF!!!!

Been around the block a few times
The more I read some of these comments the more I am convinced that the DIAD lockout is a good idea. Ask the driver to input lockout time and lock away! Truck doesn't move either!

Hey...you know what? With Telematics and the diad you can lock out both. Neither will work during lunch time. Would that make you all happy?

The concern for my safety is touching. But it's still a b** smile* reason for wanting to force me to lower my standards to yours.
Don't see how anybody asked you to lower your standards. The company has on many occasions been selective about whom they force to take a lunch and whom they don't. The standards should be the same for everybody. The company has always taken an hour pay out of employees total hours worked each day in our area, even if you didn't take the lunch. Since you work in a bonus center they let you work without taking the lunch and you get paid for all hours worked, and you get extra pay if your computer said you are under allowed for the day. Where's the equality in that? If the contract calls for a lunch break to be taken it should be taken by all employees nationwide, so that we are all working by the same standards.
