Visiting Memphis, but Not for FedEx

I have some vacation time soon and thought of visiting Memphis. I'm a big blues as well as r&b, and there seems to be plenty there. Bbq, also.

I'd like to stay downtown and not get a car, but the hotels are too expensive. What other neighborhoods would be good not too far away? I'd be staying at an AirBnB.

Thanks.

Use UBER if your not getting a car, I hear it works well.

I've lived in Memphis my whole life, so I'll give you the low down- no bull:censored2:.
First off, I highly recommend you get a car. Our public transportation is garbage, and is basically a shuttle service for crackheads. Renting a car will make your trip so much more enjoyable. Downtown is nice to stay in, but it's also over priced. I imagine you could find an airbnb flat in the midtown area, crosstown area, cooper young district, or anywhere near the University of Memphis. The east side of town might have some good spots too in the Poplar- Perkins area. Any of those places are safe andhave good restaurants and bars. Those are the trendier, more hip parts of town. There are countless of legendary BBQ joints- its really hard to go wrong. The only advice I might give you is avoiding the Rendezvous. It's got atmosphere but the ribs are in my opinion overated plus you'll wait forever to get service. Spend a couple of nights on beale, it's definitely fun, but don't spend every night there. Overton square has also gone through a renasance and has many great restaurants and bars. And then there is Graceland- its overpriced, flashy, and almost tacky. Much like Elvis himself. But I do think it's worth seeing at least once in your life. It's the king of rock n rolls house for christ sake, and when you leave town, you'll be glad you did. Ironically, it is in a run down part of town but the area around Graceland is safe- they keep it that way for visitors. If you can come in may, I recommend it. Memphis in May is a month full of BBQ , music, and festivals. It's big for visitors but also locals. Grizzlies games are a lot of fun and the FedEx forum is a very nice arena. We also have a triple A baseball team, the Redbirds that play in Autozone park downtown. It's a nicer baseball stadium than half of the pros have and if your bringing a family, tickets are affordable. It makes for a great afternoon. We got one of the best zoos in the country, the national civil rights museum, the brooks museum of art amoung other museums. We got southland park, a dog track and casino in west memphis, Arkansas, as well as a slew of casinos about an our south in Tunica, Mississippi. (Goldstrike is probably the best)
The bad- Memphis does have a crime problem, there's no sugar coating it. However, it's isolated to certain neighborhoods like frayser, Raleigh, hickory hill, and oakhaven among others. There's nothing to see or do in these parts of town so you'll have no business being in them. It's not the nicest city in the south, but comparing it to Detroit is a bit much. You'll also get hit up for money from beggars. It's not a problem exclusive to Memphis. Just firmly decline to give them money and move on. They're harmless.
I love Memphis, it's not glamorous, but it has tons of history and character, along with some great people. If you come, I hope you enjoy your stay!

Heading there for the Sweet 16 to see my Kentucky Wilcats play. Not a very easy town to get around without a car unless things have changed since I was there 2 years ago. If you want to walk to Beale Street, you will have to bite the hotel bullet and stay downtown. If you want to save money, you will need a car and maybe stay near the medical center which is close but too far to walk. I always use Uber when we go out at night to save the parking hassle and that way you can drink and not worry about the consequences.
Good advice
Hope your wildcats get their asses beat though. Its not so much the team, but nothing will make this city happier than seeing that :censored2: head Calipari lose after how he left Memphis State high and dry.

I love how you say the Rendezvous is over rated, then add you will wait forever. Apparently SOMEONE likes it. I have eaten there many times and enjoy both the atmosphere and the dry ribs. Everyone has an opinion and not everyone likes their food the same way. I have eaten ribs in many cities and I find theirs to be some of the best. I hope to eat there when I attend the games this weekend. Just HOPE I can get in. I also enjoy Dreamland BBQ when I attend Alabama football games.

Graceland tacky? You think? The man died over 40 years ago. It remains decorated the same way it was from back them. If they did away with the era decorations, it would lose its appeal. People want to see how it looked when he live there, not what it would look like if decorated today. You must be a young buck and don't understand the appeal and fan base Elvis had going all the way back to the 50's. I saw on their website that a new area just opened and hope I get a chance to visit there. I have visited there several times and see people from all over the world there. Just like the Rendezvous, apparently someone likes Graceland.

Cal is no angel but he made my Wildcats relevant again. One of the 3 or 4 best basketball schools in America. UCLA, Kentucky, North Carolina all in 1 arena. That is basketball heaven.

Wow! Thanks very very much for taking time to write such a great, informative reply. I'm considering Cooper Young and Overton Park. The only aspect of FedEx I'd like to see is the overnight hub operation. How can I arrange that?

I planned to use Lyft to get around, but it looks expensive. Still, if I take Five rides averaging $15, that's still less than renting a car. BBQ, music and cocktails/beer are high on my list. But the Civil Rights Museum also. Sports is on the sub-microscopic level of importance.

I was working at a convenience store in Memphis back in '85 when a fellow showed me a notarized letter from Elvis's father stating that the two hundred pounds of soil from E's grave were authentic. Man was the gravedigger. Said he was going to sell little packets of them at the 20th anniversary of E's death. Don't know how that turned out.

I know alot of people like Rendezvous, I like wet ribs, but I know they are good at what they do. it's just it's been built up so long that it attracts every tourist in Memphis, and to me, there are too many good Bbq joints in town to wait through the ordeal of getting served there. And you are correct, I'm post elvis. But I still recommend seeing it, like I said, at least once in your life. I surely don't regret it. Have fun while your in town man!

Your welcome man. honestly, I'm not real familiar with the hub tours- they arnt advertised for at all. I did find this though, so it might be helpful. I also think being a Fedex employee helps.

Doesn't mean that he has to endorse it.
You cant prevent a kid from leaving. Sometimes you can't predict a kid will be 1 and done when you sign him in high school. What on earth can Cal or Self or Coach K do if a kid wants to leave? The NBA created a rule and any coach that wants to win has to sign the best talent he can and if he doesn't, he will not win and will be an ex-coach. The NBA needs to change the rule and until they do, every coach will have players leave after 1 year IF they think they can make a living on the pro level.

It will be fine

There shouldn't even be a 1 year rule. I think Lebron has done ok going straight from high school to the pros.
