I'm going to speak on the the SSDI (disability) part without reading anything else, since I don't know how the UPS stuff works. No matter what happens, you will have to be qualified as permanently disabled by federal standards, which by all insurance standards, is the hardest. Be prepared to save all your money as you most likely will have a very long wait. You will have to see the SSA's doctors and fill out lots and lots of paperwork. It might be in your best interest to actually hire an specialized SSDI attorney to help you with this.

Now, as far as SSDI goes, you must have a 24 month waiting period prior to 65 (full benefits) before being able to be entitled to Part A & Part B (which will cost you $107.90 per month) if you have at least 40 quarters paid in. This does not include Part D, which is prescriptions. If you choose at the time of enrollment to exclude Part B (doctors), you will not be able to get this until you turn 65, unless you have a special exception. Same thing with Part D. The only time you can pick up original Medicare or what is known as a MA (Medicare Advantage Plan) is if you keep your existing group plan and can prove it ended therefore creating that special exception.
