UPS Makes Largest Purchase Of Renewable Natural Gas Ever In The U.S.

Seven-Year 170 Million Gallon Equivalents Purchase from Clean Energy Fuels Corp. Will Reduce GHG Emissions by More than 1 Million Metric Tons

UPS (NYSE: UPS) today announced an agreement with Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (NASDAQ: CLNE) to purchase 170 million gallon equivalents of renewable natural gas (RNG) through 2026. This is the largest commitment for use of RNG to date by any company in the United States, with a range of 22.5 – 25 million gallon equivalents per year. RNG is a key part of UPS’s strategy to increase alternative fuel consumption to be 40% of total ground fuel purchases by 2025, supporting the logistics leader’s efforts to reduce the absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of its ground fleet 12% by 2025.

“The world has a trash problem. And the world has an emissions problem. Renewable natural gas, produced naturally from bio sources such as landfills and dairy farms, not only turns trash to gas, but it turns it into clean gas,” said Mike Casteel, UPS director of fleet procurement. “Since RNG is supported by existing national infrastructure used to transport natural gas, it’s a winning solution that will help UPS to reach our ambitious sustainability goals. At the same time, we hope our unprecedented seven-year commitment serves as a catalyst for wider adoption of RNG by other companies.”

Supreme Court Rejects UPS on Postal Service Delivery Prices – BNN Bloomberg

The U.S. Supreme Court turned away a United Parcel Service Inc. appeal that aimed to force the U.S. Postal Service to raise its prices for delivering packages.

The rebuff is a victory for online retailer Amazon.com Inc., which relies on the Postal Service for deliveries and backed it in the court case.

UPS, which competes with the Postal Service in the package-delivery business, says its rival has an unfair advantage

Q&A: Inside UPS’ massive digital transformation and its ‘agile’ philosophy – siliconAngle

Dropping off some 21 million packages daily across 200 countries, the United Parcel Service of America Inc. has plenty of interactions to track. Known for its logistics prowess, UPS has managed to evolve business for today’s digital overhaul, averaging 200 million daily tracks on its revamped system launched last year. Their record was 335,000,000 tracks in a single day.

How have they accomplished this? The tracking system was all built on a new Red Hat OpenShift platform developed by their IT team. And while success has been a huge motivation, so has not being afraid to fail in order to succeed.

Nish Jani, senior application development manager at UPS, and Khurshid Sohail, application developer at UPS, spoke with Stu Miniman (@stu) and John Walls (@JohnWalls21), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the Red Hat Summit in Boston. They discussed UPS’ digital transformation, the successes and failures, and how to navigate it all (see the full interview with transcript here).
