Report: UPS, FedEx struggling to keep pace with holiday e-commerce explosion – Retail Dive

Shippers United Parcel Service and FedEx are struggling to keep up with the record numbers of e-commerce orders this holiday season and are stretching delivery times on some routes, suspending on-time delivery guarantees and refunds in some cases, and no longer promising delivery times in other instances, The Wall Street Journal reports.
UPS in particular has brought hundreds of workers from its headquarters and other corporate offices to assist with operations at hubs facing the greatest difficulty, people familiar with the matter told the Journal.
Even so, on-time delivery rates have been slightly down since Thanksgiving compared to other times of the year for both shippers, according an analysis of millions of packages by software developer ShipMatrix cited by the Journal.

A UPS driver who spotted “call 911” scrawled on a package helped police free a woman who had been held captive in her own home and sexually assaulted, authorities said.

“He was a huge help,” Franklin County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. T.J. Wild told CNN affiliate KMOV.

The driver called police after making a scheduled stop to pick up the package at a home in Robertsville, Missouri, on Tuesday. A SWAT team sent to the house in response to his call took 33-year-old James Tyler Jordan into custody, police said.

Planning for the company’s busiest time of year happens in January — just after the previous peak season. By Labor Day, UPS planners have an idea about what additional flights they’ll need for the holiday season. The company coordinates with air traffic control and the regional airport authority to make sure there are no conflicts for airspace with passenger jets.

eBike To Help Solve Ever-Evolving Demands of Urban Logistics

UPS (NYSE: UPS) today announced its first eBike in the U.S. This new electrically-assisted tricycle began delivering packages in Portland, Ore., on November 21. UPS anticipates this eBike prototype could become a component of its delivery capabilities in some other cities across the country. UPS, airline mechanics reach agreement on safety concerns – Louisville Business First

Teamsters Local 2727, which represents airline mechanics at United Parcel Service Inc., has reached an agreement with the company regarding a recent safety complaint.

The union filed a legal complaint in November calling on UPS to halt the use of what it believed to be unsafe lifts used by workers to reach the mechanical components of the aircraft.

As a part of the settlement, UPS agreed to inspect malfunctioning lifts, a news release said. The company will retain a third party to investigate the cause of previous lift failures and will establish an inspection regimen to ensure all 107 of the 19-foot lifts are properly maintained and safe to operate.
