I think a lot of it is how crappy a lot of new stuff is. Things seem to break a lot quicker.
It was just a slow drip but was only going to get worse.

My last water heater started to slowly drip from the bottom drain valve. Those can be replaced but the water heater was 15 years old so time for a new one anyway. Corrosion would have definitely been a problem if I tried.

The water here used to be very hard but we changed from township wells to city water and a lot better now. We had little choice since the city dug some deeper wells in the same area and were draining the aquifer.
A plumber told me most of the manufacturers make two sets of the same parts. The big box store version uses cheaper material to keep the price down. They might use thinner metal or substitute nylon for more expensive brass.

I knew that was true of things like electronics at Walmart. The product numbers will end in a W meaning it was made just for Walmart.

I got my water heater at Lowe's which is definitely not a budget store. Doesn't mean it doesn't have cheap parts though. They all look the same on the outside.

We got a new washer and dryer a few months ago......my first pair lasted 20 years.....replaced belt in dryer twice. My second set lasted about 10 years. The guy said this new set should last me 5 years (hooray)

Water heaters die faster if you have a soft water unit.

Yep we have a plumber redoing our whole house.

He said you can buy box store stuff and it last 10 years or you can buy all metal stuff from me and it last forever.

I don't think they make different water heaters. He was talking about valves and faucets.

Umm there's good and bad brands. We are doing an endless hot water heater. He said he would only install 3 brands because he's had so many problems with the other brands.

They do make different water heaters. I don't know if they are just for the big box stores but cheaper ones will have cheaper parts inside. But look the same from the outside. No way to tell by glancing at them.

Lowes isn't a budget store?
