As I remember MANY years ago, it was to leave enough space where you could safely go around the vehicle in front of you if they should break down.

When stopped leave enough space between your vehicle and the one in front of you
So that if the vehicle in front of you becomes disabled you can pull around it
Not sure how that works with a set
An added benefit if somebody hits you from behind you won’t be pushed into the vehicle in front of you
How you were trained is exactly the method. So with a set you need to leave some space. Not 76 feet worth cause that’s silly, but enough so you can pull around.
