Starting pay UPS vs Fedex

And from what I hear FedEx drivers get payed quite well, however the have to purchase their own vehicle, pay for all repairs (which means that if your truck breaks down your responsible not only for the cost but for making sure it is in working order for work.) Plus gas. This is what a friend told me who looked at driving for them.

That's Fedex Ground, not Express.

Regardless, Fedex sucks period. UPS makes more and most importantly they have a union. So, unlike Fedex, UPS employees have some sort of back-up. Fedex has NOTHING. HR is a JOKE. That's why Fedex couriers get written up and fired for the smallest things and nothing can be done about it. NOTHING.

I will trash Fedex until the day I die :thumbup1:

pretty sad in california.. minimum wage is moving up to 8 bucks an hour.. and UPS will still be at 8.35/hr for day shift and 8.85/hr on other shifts? definitely will be understaffed next year!!! but hey.. i tolerate this job.. it's the pits, but we'll see what i do when i get my BS in Business Administration/MIS.. graduation will be a few weeks before christmas next year.
i have pride in working for UPS and don't feel ashamed. i have been with UPS since april 2004. i only make 10.85/hr for now. it's slave labor, but i tolerate it...... okay, i'm getting off my soapbox while i still can.

Well Christ, im getting screwed, I should put in an application at Fedex... It's not like I have to worry about moving up that much. I'll probably be enlisting next year and if not, as an engineering student, I will hopefully be finding a job near my college more applicable to my area of study after my 2nd or 3rd year of college.

Kinda hard to give your 100% in a total 'work your ass off' job when im getting far below others in the same exact job. Let alone the fact I could make just as much at Blockbuster, get more hours AND get those hours to work around my schedule...

Hi I work at Fedex as a Full time courier and our handlers get paid 11.52 hr and they don't load the trucks they just unload the freight from the cans in put the packages on the belt. All fedex courier load their own trucks...UPS handlers are the only ones who load the couriers trucks

That's only for Fedex Ground driver which they are called Independent Contractors. Now for Fedex Express we do not have to take care or maintain our trucks we have mechanics.

Ummm, they're called package cars missy, just like ups buildings arent called "stations." UPS has hubs, air ramps, etc, etc. Oh yeah, ups drivers arent "couriers" they are "service providers". Ups language is almost as bad as the military, abbrivations for EVERYTHING.

I load semi-trailers for UPS and make 8.50 an hour. After 3 months I get bumped up to 9. I get 3,000 in tuition reimbursement for college.

3 of my friends just got jobs at Fedex doing the exact same thing and they start at 10 bucks an hour. After 3 months they get bumped to 10.50. They get 2,000 for college.

Why do they get so much more at Fedex? 1.50 more an hour seems a bit extreme for pretty much the exact same job.

damn you serious? handlers at my station (fedex) start at 13.80/hour and we get 3,000 in tuition reimbursement as well. from what i hear the starting is about to go up another quarter pretty soon as well. you guys are getting ripped off somewhere down the line. i work about 14hours/week as a handler and receive the minimum 17.5hr pay and still get full benefits including health, dental vision...etc for like 35/month.

Well, just goes to show you the different perspective each company has on unskilled/semi-skilled work. The key is trying to retain personnel in such positions. Are both jobs part-time or fulltime? I suspect the turnover rate is very high.

UPS is still holding to the old fashioned/ outdated belief that benefits & college tuition for their pt'ers is enough to get new hires. It's not. A good preloader in building is someone that shows up for work everyday. The Y generation is lazy & does not look at long term goals. The ones that do see their way to becoming drivers hate it. I worked the preload a little & met a guy who would tell me every nite that he couldnt wait to be a driver, how the money was so much better & how easy of a job it was. He made it to driving & now he tells me everyday how much he hates it & how he should've stayed on the preload. I'm sorry but 8.50-9.50 an hour is not enough to survive on, especially nowadays with management sending home these people early & cutting their hours.

TJ, P/T express couriers are either AM or PM, the time frame to go full time depends on
openings available, one benefit is after a set amount of time(varies) you can transfer to
another location. I was P/T for about 2 months when one guy decided to leave, so I took his
vacated position. my P/T hours were ~8am to 1pm roughly daily. now I get about 8-9hrs a
day(friend/T)

you have a union for a reason, use the contract to your advantage, if u are asked to go home before 3.5 and before ppl with less seniority than u go home and u go, thats ur own problem, not theirs.

I'm looking for some info on pt UPS vs pt FEDEX. I'm currently a sorter working twilight shift at UPS, I've been there about 3 months. I do it as a pt job, just to make some extra money and for the benefits, I already have a FT job. A friend of mine who works for fedex has been telling me to apply there for months. He is a PT material handler at Newark Airport here in Jersey, He has been there 2 years and makes about $15.00 an hour. I started at $9.50 and have just recieved a raise to $10. From the looks of our new contract, I would have to work about 7 years to earn what my friend makes at FEDEX after just 2. Not to mention that $310 union fee I'm still paying off! I'm going to interview with FEDEX on Monday. Can any anyone give me some idea of what life is like working PT at FEDEX???

Out of curiosity, I thought I would surf this site to see what all the hoopla was about over on the brown side....!!!

but to answer this question - you have to look at the big picture. UPS has a union and FedEx wants to keep the union away. Pay your PT above the average and they may not make a stink about the union. They forget about the benefits or monies put in for a pension etc. This all costs money so you take some away from the hourly wage but overall with benefits UPS has the best pay in the industry. You can't just look at the hourly wage.

Enough said....I am out of here.

A regular FedEx cargo handler does not make $15.00 per hour. There is a different handler job classification where you do additional duties like certified forklift operator and international specialist. These are typically full-timers, a lot of whom are the older ex-Flying Tigers people, who know a great deal about the intracacies of international paperwork. That position tops-out at around $20.00 an hour and is quite different from the standard handler job where you basically throw boxes.

In the short run, you might make a little more money as a FedEx handler, but if you want to stay in this business and become a driver or something else, go to UPS. Your wages and benefits will quickly out-strip anything you get at FedEx. UPS is a much better company.

Hourly wise after 10 years PT the money is decent but not enough to sustain a family unless it was FT. 10 years you make around $20 an hour PT and if you are single you can live on this and if you want supplement with PT job.

while the pay at fed ex may be a little higher the hours that they work per shift is way less than at ups. loading the trailers with fed ex at a station is usually 2hours 3 at the most..ups is 4-5 depending on the season...you are better off at ups

FedEx Express actually has several classifications of handlers. In my area there are Ramp Handlers, who must pass an FBI and TSA background check and have airport ID. They operate GSE(tugs, loaders, etc),handle pkgs, and help load CTV's. The current starting rate for this type of handler in my market is $12.50 an hour, and they typically get around 5 hours per shift. Early AM and evening shifts are available.

There are also Station Handlers, who typically only load and unload containers and assist drivers in loading/unloading their trucks. They usually get fewer hours and make less money than a Ramp Handler...I'm not sure of their current rate. Also an AM or PM position.

A third type is a "Material Handler" (not sure if that's the exact name), and these are the people who handle loading Heavyweight trucks, are certified forklift operators, and who usually have specialized knowledge about International requirements. They help build the Heavyweight pallets and containers, load customer trucks, and also usually do some data entry. They top-out at around $20.00 per hr in my market area, and also work at the airport and must pass the TSA and FBI background checks for airport ID. These employees are on various AM and PM shifts.

FedEx Ground is entirely different, and since I don't work for that division I'm not sure of their hours and/or pay. I do know that there is a lot of turnover for every position but the "Material Handler" and that they're always looking for people.

It'll take about 4-5 years to make 13/hr at UPS part-time, but it's worth it with only union dues taken for health/dental.

To make top rate as a full-time driver is 3 yaer progression now. How about fed-ex? I hear wage progression is longer...

$23.22 in Aug 2008 working an inside-inside 22.3 job at UPS full-time. That works out to right around 50k with no overtime. how do similar jobs at Fed-Ex compare? If there are any?...

Fed-ex does pay somewhat more to start, to my knowledge with similar benefits. That's about where it ends, though.
