Strike in Chicago?

No one put a gun to your head to take the crappiest job at UPS, you took the crap job and you work 20 hours a week when most work 40. Get a 40 hour a week job! You accepted the wages with the excellent benefits. Most people only take these CRAPPY jobs for the benefits, if you are living off this wage you better up your standards. The honest REASON sups have to work is becuase your union brother (lol) didnt come into work.

I know no one put a gun to my head since the security guards don't carry any! But I did sign my life away it seems when i was hired by UPS. I did work a 40 hour job before i came to UPS. I know how it is like to work 40 hours! I used my 40 hour job to help pay for my schooling. I decided to leave when i didn't want to move with the company to its new location. So i signed my life away at UPS! Were I can get them to help me pay for my schooling. I took this job for the schooling and the benefits and i knew in time i will make good money. Now UPS wants say oh sorry we aren't going to pay you well since inflation is up and are in a recession! Well we wouldn't be in recession if people were actually going out and buying stuff and having fun! Now would we????? Also there is a call in list for management to call higher seniority people to fill jobs when people don't come in. Plus when i first started at UPS i was trained to help any dock possible and not be assigned to one dock. I knew what went it almost every trailer in my wing and knew i had to break jams. Now the trainers are lazy and don't teach anything to anyone! They train like crap and that makes walls crappier thanks to the trainer! i'm just going to leave it at that....this site makes my blood boil because of stupid management!

(wishes he never found this site)

Drewed some people think they enhance their argument with a lot of blocked out profanity words. I know i am always impressed. :happy-very:

I never really swore until i started working at ups! I hear management always swearing at us. So, swearing in your area might a little different there!

I thought a strike is meant to show your disagreement on contractual negotiations and you want to better what is being given to you?

Yes, and when our country goes to war is meant to show disagreement on diplomatic issues? :smart:

Such a sweet way of putting it.

I am proud of my locals negotiaing efforts, while ashamed of the rest of the country.

Here is a new article to read: http://socialistworker.org/2008/07/30/strike-vote-chicago-ups

Package why would an article from some socialist worker site possibly influence me to do anything but puke?

I think the problem is that the UPS negotiating team is panicing because 705 is putting up a strong fight for a progressive contract rather than being pushed around. National screwed us over big time, that is why we are taking matters into our own hands. I'm confident the hard nosed aproach management is taking will soften up once we live up to our words, as in the past.

Here is the problem with your argument. 710 quietly negotiated their contract and is rumored to have done better then the national.
Your guys claim the company is not playing ball and supposedly offering far less then the national?
How can that be. if the company is dicking around with 705 then they would have done the same with 710.
You have to look at the idiots you have negotiating for 705. they screwed that pooch until its rear was red.

I'm sure as a manager you are aware that Chicago is the transportation heart of the country whilist being one of the strongest union areas in the country. UPS will only be able to divert packages for so long until they realise it will be cheaper to pay us fairly. CACH has it's own railyard, and trains save UPS tons of money.

If You guys walk then my belief is we should punish you in every way.
we save a lot of money if we close down that monster in chicago. I think we should reward you guys for a strike by shutting down the CACH hub once and for all.
Yes, we may be shooting ourselves in the foot but a strike is meant to inflict financial loss to the company. The financial loss to the company will be much higher than to members of local 705 because we only see a small fraction of the revenue we generate in our paychecks.:happy2:

A strike during a recession is an act of suicide. hope your guys realize that.

This is a typical day at ADDILT:

1.) Outbound dock is clean, therefore it must be overstaffed so send someone home.
2.) Another outbound dock blows up with supervisor working, understaffed to begin with
3.) FT sup decides to pull sorter off isle to clean up loads, PT sup starts sorting
4.) By the time the sup can find a working scaner... load for 2 minutes
5.) Sort isle blows up litterally 10 mins later so the spothelp sorter is sent back, sup still working
6.) Flow spike to SD's so belts start going off now the whole wing is melting down
7.) Repeat

I remember one day I was bounced around between 4 different outbounds and the sort isle about 6 or 7 times.

Hey Stup *******), the majority of the labor force at UPS is part-time (25hrs). We work our way up from the bottom based on senority. Getting a full time job can take years. Can you really be this ignorant? No one is going to put a gun to our heads when we decide to go on strike because of how (admittitly) crappy our jobs are.

The real HONEST reason why sups are working, is so they can fudge their productivity numbers to impress their *******r. This is so blantly obvious, but you stups will never admit it.

Well that about it covers it all. We have a guy here who was clearly standing around watching everyone else work when he should have been doing his job.

They should pay you to post on this site. I tune in just to see what you have to say, you've got a response to everything, and while most of it is insanely redundant you sometimes come up with something clever. Carry on.....

package man works as hard as i do if not better. I'm either breaking jams, starting belts and answering the phone while my sup is somewhere BSing on his phone! My full timer is usually wondering why we are 70% to 120% (120% means we are weighted out since volume is higher then normal) most of the night and the sup isn't there to enforce some management skill that you guys learn in one weeks time! I think you should stop hiring morons right from the training class that have no experience what so ever in the company! Maybe start hiring your new sups when they have been there for 2 years atleast. They would know how to set diverters right, and how to run a dock better. There is only a couple of good sups i know of in the building which is pretty sad!

Good plan, might as well sell it to FedEX because all that money the company invested in it was the stupidest idea the company had since allowing the workforce to go union! Your stockholders will really be impressed.:wink2:

We will truley be rewarded when the packages move from the automated sort to my wimpy little manual sort isle giving my hub a huge increase in volume.:happy2:

All jokes over, you are not very intimidating and starting to look more like some strikebuster goon spreading rubbish. Obviously there are many people monitoring this thread, your foolishness will only fuel our resolve.

I don't know if you're talking about me standing around, but the only time I stand around is when I have not been directed to work because stups are so busy working they don't know I'm there. Therefore, I am always doing my job.:happy2:

That's what they exactly want. They want to say they make more money than us. They feel they accomplished something when they make a dime an hour more than all of us.

UPS rubbed their shoulders, told 710/705 that they were their favorite locals, and put an extra dime on their plate

:congrats: "BUT DON'T TELL THE OTHERS, YOU'RE MY FAVORITE LOCAL"

Read it again. 710 got the extra dime for a total of .80 per hour. 705 did not. Reading is fundamental my friend.

I dont have alot of time so i would like to say that i have not read these posts over the last several days. Im not avoidong any questions on purpose and when i get a chance i will reply.

We went to 11pm chicago time tonight with ups with little movement or getting any closer to a handshake. Yes 710 has a handshake with ups but also has an agreement with ups if 705 does any better in anything they to would receive it, this came out of pat flynns mouth yesterday morning when he and several others visited us. Ups was working with 705 and 710 yesterday at the same hotel multi tasking.

Tonight ups proposals included ptime package drivers, air drivers can now pick up grounds, and several other proposals that are just so out of line its uncalled for at this stage in the talks. Ups has implemented on call feeder language that is currently not in our contract, they have 15 drivers out of cach sitting at home while contractors are pulling 100s of trailers in and out per day. We have all the trailer numbers documented because our feeder drivers at cach are doing a great job looking out for one another.

Anyone ever ask about the eft check card? I cannot believe that this passed on the national level.

The last two days the companies top gun opened up with threats against us, today he stated that cach will be laying off 1238 ptimers and another 140 feeder drivers because of the diversion of packages from cach. Ups has a 5 day plan in place with the police departments here on their estimated length of time the strike will last.

This does not sound like a company that plans on bargaining in good faith over the next 24 hours. If ups would have taken this serious from the beggining this all could have been avoided. Now we are fighting for our jobs and this is not about money.Ups has offered us the national raises but is off on the pension that the national received. As you can see we are fighting to stop subcontracting, ptime air drivers doing ftime package work, and ptime package drivers 7 day work weeks the list goes on.

hall from the ibt has been sitting in on our talks since yesterday morning and cannot believe ups's strategy. Ken is not negotiating our contract he is here observing the talks and supporting us in whatever we need.

Hopefully ups gets serious tomorrow so we can settle this or it looks like it will have to be settled from the streets.

I am not the bogey man.

This forum is for that purpose of debate.

I do not have the power to affect anything in Chicago. that nightmare or happy ending will evolve on its own without my input or participation.

Your buds from Chicago have thrown their case onto the court of world opinion.

Either their case is solid or I shoot it full of holes.

the fact that 710 handled their negotiations with quiet diplomacy and may have done better then the masters now appears to weigh 705's case in my favor.

The company did not offer 710 one deal while trying to screw 705. The only thing different in both cases is the idiots negotiating for 705.

I rest my case. rebut if you wish but the prosecuting attorney in this case is not the issue.:happy-very:

Remember how 705 was posting all those contract offers to keep the members informed.

Not no more. Not since july 10.

a clear effort to piss the members off with low ball offers and to hide the better offers.

So as the sides have moved closer to what should be common ground the local has stopped posting those offers and counter offers.

What dooooooooooo they have to hide?

Had a couple of friends from the chicago area tell me 705 would strike no matter what UPS offered. One day left but they may be right after all.

We wish it were that simple. Once my FT sup yelled at me for cutting the train when there was no more room "never cut the belt!" So I listened to him, 5 minutes later it weight out with him standing right there! Then he went off yelling ":censored2::censored2::censored2::censored2:!" No sharing ideas with these numbskulls.

The company is trying to negotiate the degression of our current contract, and you are calling our negotiators idiots? Even if our negotiators were highballing (I disagree with this, we are asking for what should have been asked for in the national) the UPS negotiators come off as the most childish and selfish slimeballs imaginable.

Perhaps you'd think differently if you were actually under a contract. Our opinions are completly polarized and that is because we are on opposite sides of the fence.

More for workers OR more for stockholders is what these contracts are about. Honestly, which sounds more fair to you? I've always hated the idea of public corporations, this is why.

A few thoughts from close to the negotiations.

Whew it has been a long day. Negotiations intense and sometimes a little bit on the edge of bizarre. We have the company right where we want them.
Tomorrow the closing show of chapter one. The company will desperately try to settle this and try to take when they give. but we really are not there to settle this.
You folks out there have been terrific. I have been a getting a lot of letters and emails in support of our talks. The support has been heartwarming.

It is time for chapter two. The strike. Ron Carey did a terrific job in 97. He did much to restore pride in the labor movement. We now face a serious crisis. Automakers are in trouble here in the US and the NAFTA drain has Labor unions losing the power they once had. We have to head off this weakening of power at all costs.

We will walk on Friday no matter what happens Thursday. When we do we will need your support. These talks are not about a few nickles or words in the contract. Its a fight to restore the power of the labor.I have stopped in here and seen some of the debates taking place. Its not about preserving the state of UPS its about preserving the state of labor.
we have to hurt UPS in the pocket. We have to make them lose customers. They have to lose big. UPS needs to feel a lot of pain on this one. Doing so will significantly restore our bargaining power in the future.

We will need your help. Encourage the membership in your locals to join us. A unified front is a must. The end result can be an employer that shakes in their shoes when we negotiate a contract since they will know we stand united and are prepared to win at all costs.

I know the arguments against. Loss of customers , a loss of jobs. Remember though that there is no gain without sacrifice. A strong overwhelming win today will end up gaining us much more in the future.

It has been good seeing Red and others sit at the tables and learn how to negotiate. We will need Red and others to step up and lead the charge. Our fight today is the beginning of a new awakening in the annals of labor. There can be no better victim then to humble a company as large and well respected as UPS. Join us as we begin this glorious fight.

In solidarity always.

Word in Cincinnati is that there is a handshake deal. I spoke with a couple of Chicago drivers at a meet point and that is the latest they knew of.

Everytime someone posts from Chicago, it's the same thing. Supervisors working. Rules being broken. Feeder drivers staying home while contractors doing work. All that jazz.

When the Berlin Wall came down, did they put it back around 705's area? It doesn't sound like (705) negotiating its own contract is working !! Don't you realize this by now.

Everywhere around this country, we fight the same "fires" as you do. But for some reason, the Chicago area "burns" so hot you can't take it anymore.

MY SOLUTION

New people must be brought in to fix the problems. A strike and/or contract negotiations will not solve anything.

The issue is the people involved at the higher levels of BOTH organizations. Both parties better take a long hard look at themselves before your arrogance ruins it for everybody else in brown.

AND

For all the part timers who bitch and complain about their jobs and their "existance" in the UPS pyramid.

It's not going to change. Every other full timer in this company had to "sell their souls" to make it up the ladder and EARN the right to be full time. When you work part time at UPS, you either go to college or have another part time job. THAT SIMPLE

In this day and age, YOU WILL NOT AFFORD TO LIVE ON JUST PART TIME MONEY FROM UPS. Guess what, neither did I, so I had another part time job after working here. Get with it. Now I've been full time for 8 years and feel good about those 6 1/2 part time years I've worked through.
