The slobs among us...

Is it really that hard to throw away your trash at the end of the day? Time allowance? Just tell your sup exactly what you were doing, which is cleaning out the PC. The amount of trash in some PCs amazes/disgusts me. I was on vacation this past week. Let's see how my PC looks when I get back on Tuesday. Hopefully I won't have to give a talking to a cover driver/drivers this week.

When I go on vacation I fill the fuel tank, empty the trash, wash the windows and fill up my box of dog biscuits. I also tape a note above the windshield reminding whoever replaces me that I left the truck clean and ready to work out of and that I would appreciate having it returned to me the same way.

Also...I am not a "hoarder". I have a small tote in the back with dog biscuits, a tape gun, some bungee cords, and an NDA pak with waybills, extra delivery notices and pens in it. Other than that, I keep the truck stripped out and empty of clutter. Less is more.

Worst finds...
-Half empty rotting tuna cans, another driver must have had the same cover driver because he would just call him tuna all the time.
-porn and a glass jar with male excrement in a smalls box (along with other trash)... just about threw up.

Clean up your crap people!

Management arent the ones leaving a mess behind in the package cars.
soberups,

That is true, however it is ultimately management responsibility to control their employees.

It is not good for the fraternal community of the union for members to be fighting and divided over alleged job failure issues.

If a driver is a slob and is not doing his job then it is a management issue.

The way to deal with this with Integrity and not against him would be to bring the matter up to your shop steward in an effort to handle it without management involvement.

Let the shop steward know that if the guilty employee doesn't handle the situation then it will leave you no choice but to file an Article 18 Section 1 grievance.

This will be bad for everyone, let him know that you are truly hoping to avoid this.

FYI.

When I first started at UPS there was a very large rank and file Car Washer Staff. They actually cleaned the Package Cars back then.

That staff has been virtually cut to a non existent staff. There are a couple of people who put the line up in called car washers, a diesel fueler who is called a car washer, and a couple of 22.3 guys who check oil and work on the sort.

I think this is also a management decision that has led to this division amongst union brothers.

Sincerely,
I

Sisyphus had it easy.
When I was a cover driver, the Center Manager did not believe me when I told him about the amount out garbage I was finding. So one day when I got back to the building I filled up a DR bag and left it on his desk.

I was given a light dispatch and after doing a sweep of all of my bulk pickups I came back to the building to swap package cars (double tripping adds quite a bit to your dispatch time). There was only one car available and it was disgusting. I wrote it up in the DVIR as such---"This package car is disgusting"----and the center manager, after inspecting the car, agreed. He directed a 22.3 to wash it and clean out the interior.

Our mechanic is a complete slob but he knows exactly where everything is. I've come across both kinds. Slobs and the meticulously neat. Both can be highly competent but from what I've seen, don't try to turn a slob into a neat freak or vice versa. Doesn't work well at all.

We are getting two new package cars and I was asked if I wanted one of them. I was a bit surprised as mine is in excellent shape with "only" 116K on the odometer. The mechanic told me that I was chosen because I keep my PC as clean as possible, take care of it and write it up when needed. He then went on to name several of my co-workers who he would never even consider giving one of them to because they are slobs. I guess being a "neat freak" does have it's rewards.

I only have 3 drivers that cover my route and I've explained to them all that I am not their mother and should not have to clean up after them. If you get into someone's regular truck and it is relatively clean then you should leave it the same way you found it.

That being said, one of my CDs leaves his empty cig packs in my truck but usually clears everything else out. No problem. The one other though, will purposely leave his trash piled up in my truck. He thinks I'm being ridiculous but I asked him how he would feel if I came into his house and take a huge dump on the rug and just leave. To me it's the same thing.
