Do you need an air compressor or tire gauge
Of course they did, UW notified the charity that you donated to them. Only not as much as you think. You donated a small % to all of them and to UW administrative too. They want you to feel as though it went to where you directed it.... only thing is...its not the whole truth. You see they mislead and decieve people into thinking their donations only goes to certain charities otherwise they would lose donations if it was all controlled by UW.
They've shown in the past that they will coerce organizations by withholding money. How is that possible if the money was directed by the giver.

UPS pays the admin fee.

Designating your money to a specific charity does not mean they will receive one cent more than they would have otherwise from the United Way...All contributions are fungible.
The United Way supports "charities" that many find very offensive, remember your contribution does not truly support a specific charity even if you "designate" your money.

In addition, charities which apply for United Way funding incur additional administrative costs to justify their need to the United Way.

Say you contribute $100
United way takes $12.50 to $15 for fundraising, paying outrageous salaries, and distributing your money.
Individual charities incur approximately 3% additional administrative costs to justify their need to the United Way

So the $100 you gave becomes $82 and is distributed to whoever the local United Way board (made up of corporate executives) deems worthy. Some examples are the Shakespeare Theater, wealthy Preparatory Schools, Planned Parenthood, the United Nations Association etc. etc. You may very well agree with funding these specific organizations, but there are likely some you would not.

The United Way board determines St. Jude needs $100,000 this year in funding. Designated contributions specifically naming St. Jude come in at $20,000.

St. Jude receives $100,000 ($20,000 in designated funds, $80,000 in undesignated funds) from the United Way, not $120,000. The $20,000 in designated funding simply frees up $20,000 to give to another not so worthy charity.

Give your $100 directly to St Jude.
If you give it through the United Way St Jude will get $85.
St Jude will also incur expenses (typically 3%) for all the paperwork the UW makes them submit to justify their need.

So what happens to the 15% match offered by the company?
Show me it in writing.

15% match I believe is the administration cost incurred by UPS. So donate $100, UW gets your $100, UPS pays it's own 15%administrative fees (borrowed manager)

Even if you show me in writing they give $115, the money still doesn't increase the total amount the charity receives from UW....see my post above.

My sister was a UW administer for decades.

United Way Partnership

Each year our employees participate in the annual United Way fundraising campaign. With a matching pledge from The UPS Foundation, funds raised help support community-based organizations and assist United Way in promoting grade level reading, high school graduation, and financial stability.

UPS partners with you to give more. For each UPSer's gift, UPS will contribute 15 cents for every dollar you give. This separate company contribution will go to your home United Way and be allocated equitably across the four impact areas.

In addition the United way chapters usually take an additional fee for all donor directed contributions. So if you designate a specific charity, UW takes an additional 12% fee to process your contribution.

Here is UW Iowa's policy, which is typical:

United Way Fees for Services

United Way's administrative fee for Donor-Directed Contribution Program services is as follows:

  1. For campaign year 2019, the per-designation fee is 12.00%

And UPS would contribute this dollar amount as a corporation if you donate or not. Additionally they count loaning managers for UW promotion etc. As part of this contribution.

On top of that the 15% corporate contribution does not "follow" your contribution.

You designate Red Cross, UPS in kind contribution goes to the drag queen story hour.

Give directly to a charity without million dollar executives and without the middleman.
