UPS Expands In-Building Package Delivery Using Latch Smart Access Devices

UPS (NYSE:UPS) today said it would expand to 10 additional cities a program that enables its package delivery drivers to use Latch smart access devices to make in-building deliveries to multi-unit buildings securely and conveniently for residents who are not at home to receive packages.

Starting in mid-2019, owners or property managers of qualifying buildings in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Boston, Miami and Seattle equipped with Latch devices may permit UPS drivers to enter buildings – but not individual units – to make deliveries. The program is successfully operating in New York and San Francisco.

SR-201 reopens after formic acid spills from delivery truck – KSL

State Route 201 reopened Tuesday afternoon after it was briefly closed when a container holding formic acid fell out of a UPS delivery truck earlier in the day.

Emergency crews responded to a report of a hazmat situation after a container holding approximately 5 liters of formic acid fell out of the delivery truck heading east on S.R. 201 about 11 a.m., Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Todd Royce said.

Royce said the latch of the delivery truck was loose and had opened, allowing the container to fall out of the truck. West Valley Fire Department’s hazardous materials response team responded to clean up the spill and neutralize the acidity.

UPS goes against tradition – outsider named to run its fastest-growing unit – FreightWaves

The keys to UPS Inc.’s fastest-growing and arguably its most pivotal 21st century business have been handed to an outsider.

Earlier this week, Philippe Gilbert took the reins as the first president of the company’s Supply Chain and Freight operation, one of the Atlanta-based company’s three business units. (UPS’ domestic U.S. and international package units have long had presidents.) Gilbert joined UPS from the German firm DB Schenker Logistics, where he ran its 10-country Americas region. He reports to COO Jim Barber, himself an odds-on favorite to be the next CEO of UPS should David Abney, the current chairman and CEO, retire later this year as many UPS-watchers expect.

Gilbert was also named the twelfth member of UPS’ powerful Management Committee, which runs a company whose history and success have been forged by a management-by-consensus philosophy and a promote-from-within culture.

“This dog was screaming and crying and going crazy,” he said.

The sun was nearly gone, and he didn’t see anything. He delivered the package and drove to the other side of the pond.

FedEx to acquire Israeli-based Flying Cargo Group’s international express business – FreightWaves

FedEx Express, the air and international unit of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX), has reached a conditional agreement to acquire the international express business of Flying Cargo Group, FedEx Express’ long-standing Israeli agent. Flying Cargo Group is one of the most world’s most iconic transportation and logistics agencies.

The agreement, which is subject to regulatory approval, is expected to close in the first half of 2019, the companies explained late yesterday. Until then, Flying Cargo’s international express business and FedEx Express, which operates international services in Israel through its TNT Express operation, will function independently.

Flying Cargo will continue to own and operate the rest of its portfolio, which includes warehousing, fulfillment and intra-Israeli pick-up and delivery, the companies said.
