It's not nearly as hydrating as water or gatorade...and all that sugar actually makes you feel thirsty. I'll drink it during peak....but not in the summer while I'm working.

Gatorade has just as much if not more sugar but generally your body isn't picky at all about what liquid goes in.

Ounce for ounce, that's simply not true. A 20oz of Coke has 65grams of sugar while a 28oz glacier cherry Gatorade has 53g. Plus it has sodium to help replenish what you sweat out.
I prefer ice water myself, but I do enjoy the occasional Gatorade.
I drink it diluted. I get sick of drinking water.

The sodium and potassium are the important part of Gatorade for me. Could do with less sugar but the low calorie G2 stuff costs a lot more than buying powder for the regular stuff.
Probably less important in preload as the sun isn't roasting everything out of you. A water jug always worked fine for me.
