Why was the company adamant about changing from 10 years to 5 years?

The original 10 years came from the 2013 supplement.. the final countdown ends with the 2023 contract...

Corporate is planning on eliminating it’s defined pension plans, the recent sell off of UPS freight with it’s pension and health and welfare liabilities is a clear indicator of their intentions come 2023.

Look at the current slates for the teamsters .. Vairma’s is clearly vested and running with the Western Conferences, which is 92 percent fully funded and sitting pretty. O’Brien’s is counting on the Eastern, Central and Southern to show up strong.

If UPS does negotiate out of providing pension benefits to the Central and Southern part timers it will not affect the West...it is an easy target because no one really cares about part timers anymore. They will offer a matched 401 k similar to management’s which is going to end in 2023 also..the writing is on the wall...

The Central and Southern region full timers are already in the UPS/Teamsters pension plan.

What is your speculation as to what would happen to yet to retire and retired full timers in that plan?

UPS can't orphan it's single-employer pension. Would they propose a phased transition?

The full timers will remain in their current IBT/UPS pension plan, only the part timers will be affected in the (UPS Pension Plan)..all those years that most of us worked as a part timer prior to going full time are protected by federal law. It is the company’s ace in the hole because they have total control over all our part time vested years. They could offer a higher benefit level or eliminate that 6 % penalty prior to age 65 to sweeten the pot.

The IBT/UPS is a defined pension plan but will be untouchable considering the potential of the Central States Fund defaulting in 2025 or earlier.
The company would be highly interested in what this next stimulus package will do for underfunded Union multi pension plans.

It could go either way. We're finally seeing a form of integration between tech workers and the grunts in cali and fully organized unionization efforts for Amazon and efforts for Walmart too. Our union hinges on whether or not they can pull it off elsewhere for now.

With the 80's kids retiring , there's probably going to be some big and unexpected changes with how the newer generation (and the country as a whole) sees themselves.

We had better be getting a strong raise that's for sure. For everybody.

I heard that corporate just recently raised the starting hourly part time rate to 18.50 an hour. Contractually the starting wage for a newly hired part timer was negotiated at 13.00 or 15.00 an hour.

They apparently had a hard time with retention.

You will be lucky to keep what you have. You are all in the "give things back" mode and I don't see an end to it.
I remember years ago, when we had a 2 year contract, the Union won improvements either in wages or vacations or pensions. Now it is give back to the company every 5 years.

Because the 2023 contract will only be a 3 year contract ?

People threw a hissy fit about it in 2008, 2013, and again in 2018. Nothing happened.

There was a lot of discussion about it here and on other platforms.

Since 1968.... the minimum length contract was 3 years. That changed to 5 years in 1997. (Ron Carey)

We've had improvements in wages, vacations, and pensions in every contract.

Givebacks ?

Meh....

The company is entitled to something in negations. That's how contracts work.
