Texting is not in the contract language, we are supposed to talk to somebody one hour before start time. You have to be a real loser to not bother to call in to work if you can't make your obligation.

Ha, I got that covered, too - I have the UPS numbers and a couple names on my fridge in case my child needs to call me in.

I have overslept once and been late because of the DOT physical once and both times UPS and other drivers were tracking me down because it was so unlike me.

I can't imagine just not showing up - on purpose.

In our local we are allowed up to 3 NC/NS before they can discipline.

Hopefully they will amend this to 5 in the new contract, along with a maximum of 3 roll-aways per year.

Discipline? 3 strikes you should be gone IMO. I would say one no call is a possible excuse in the rare case your phone breaks. Three no calls says you don't care about the job at all.
