Opportunism is the conscious policy and practice of taking selfish advantage of circumstances – with little regard for principles, or with what the consequences are for others. A union representative, union steward, or shop steward is an employee of an organization or company, who represents and defends the interests of her/his fellow employees but who is also a labor union official. rank-and-file members of the union hold this position voluntarily (through democratic election by fellow workers or sometimes by appointment of a higher union body) while maintaining their role as an employee of the firm. As a result, the union steward becomes a significant link and conduit of information between the union leadership and rank-and-file workers.
The duties of a union steward vary according to each labor union's constitutional mandate for the position. In general, most union stewards perform the following functions:
  • Monitor and enforce the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement (labor contract) to ensure both the firm and union worker are not violating the terms of the agreement.
  • Ensure that the firm is in compliance with all federal, state and local laws and regulations.
  • Represent and defend fellow workers whom the firm believes violated company policy or the terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement, often through the grievance process.
  • Communicate and disseminate official union policy, memos and directives to workers in the shop.
  • Popularize and promote union consciousness and values in the workplace.

So what powers is she actually gaining? How is she taking advantage? What are her self interested motives? Or is she simply doing what a union steward is suppose to do?

RIH251, I have to disagree with you. My feeling is that she has an acute sense of self awareness (United251 that isn't a compliment). It's a preoccupation of ones self. To fit in. To belong. We could go on for days about the psychology of this behavior, but simply stated, she is self conscious. The authoritative nature of a steward or liaison masks an anxiety of insecurity.

Yeah but I believe she is a 40 hour employee of the hospital and that pay is part of her 40 hours, so really she could just stop being a liaison and go right back to working her regular job and still make the same amount of pay. So really...what is the gain?

Stink, BR gained a reputation in that hospital as an amazing steward. The new slate recognized that, set the politics aside, and reached across the isle.

You act like it was an easy courtship. You are wrong. It took a LOT of convincing to get BR on board. But in the end, she believed in the exact same values of an empowered membership as the new slate does. That is what won her over. And for the record, she has stated many times that NW is going to get a kick in the balls for what he did to her...when he least expects it.
