The Runner Gunner Lunch Skippers are HATING the new DOT lunch rule

DS

This new rule should've been in place from the day every driver was trained.
It's a no brainer.Upstate,I'm surprised at you for saying it's ok to sort during your break.
It's like going in early to smurf your load off the clock.Maybe I'm just lucky that my area allows me to get rid of all my businesses before I take my break, but I suspect some guys try to go like manics to get home earlier.Take your lunch ,somewhere nice.Relax.Sleep.Do whatever you like, trust me.You will feel better for it.

728, they may be interested in auditing records; UPS is making sure we follow through on that part. And it doesn't take much thought to realize if I put in a 30 min lunch but also show work for that time UPS may come after me for leaving them open to sanctions. However, there are too many big rig drivers out there (and maybe some smaller outfits as well) where it is too easy to do some really egregious things, akin to delivering while "taking lunch", versus TOUCHING a box while on break, which the record won't show, which can't be proven unless directly observed, and if observed can be clearly seen to be not dangerous at all, in that sorting the truck doesn't tire a driver out, for the most part. You can exert more enrgy reading the sports section if you know the route well enough (putting stops is sequence is a whole lot easier than figuring out why the Phillies brought Darin Ruf back up to fill in for Howard, or what took so long in the first place to IR Howard).

They aren't looking for that, and even if they stumbled across it, they know it isn't the dangerous condition the law is meant to stop, provided the driver isn't "compelled" to do so, which is why I believe they may ask some questions to see what the driver is up to, and why. I move boxes around sometimes to clear space for me to lay out on my truck floor. Have I "broken the law"? Yes. Does the DOT care? No.

Yep I have a good friend whose in laws own a trucking company. It's nothing for him to work 20 hours 3-4 days in a row when on vacation from his other job. I'm sure they pay him cash when he's done and likely no record he was even there. I've preached the 14 hour rule to him many times. He pays no attention.

So weird that I haven't had a PCM about this yet. Wonder if it happened when I was on vacation last month. I figured I would have heard someone talking about it since then though. Weirdness.

Over, define "man up".

I'm a man of principle; laws come from principles. Children need laws; men need principles. Knowing the difference, and why the two exist, I don't get worked up over someone else's lunch. It means nothing to me. That dude has a right to a lunch...and to spend it however he sees fit, so long as he doesn't endanger another person or the operation. Most grownups understand that. Who needs to "man up"?

Use this handy guide:

Sorting=work
moving boxes in your way = not work
pre-sheeting = work
spouting off on BC from your smartphone = not work
Driving = work
kicking back in the seat = not work
counting airs = work
stretching or doing pullups = not work
responding to DIAD messages = work
completely misunderstanding that laws are for Men too = not work

DS, I am not suggesting that drivers should sort their package cars while on lunch. Lunch is meant to be a break from work; however, if an adult decides the he/she wants to spend their lunch break sorting their package cars then that should be their choice.

Is there a number we can call? Would like to help management insure our "rabbits" take their break. (For their own well being of course). Perhaps the bragging about how I burned up your route, got in so early, etc, will stop.

...or you could worry about yourself and mind your own business....

This got you so worked up you'd rat out your fellow teamster, over something that does not pertain nor concern you? And why? Because he's a "me'ster"....but he isn't selling out his brothers, no matter how you twist it....

Even though it's illegal???? Is it alright for them to snort cocaine too?

As good men, it is our responsibility to report criminals and lawbreakers. Fellow Teamster or not, if you're breaking the law you deserve to be reported. I'm certainly not going to aid and abet a criminal by not reporting his activity because he is a Teamster.

I too don't care unless it affects me. And how does it? Running like a fool won't by itself save much time, however skipping meal time and working off the clock does. This type of stupidity throws numbers way off, numbers made up in the magical land of Clarksville. Now, suddenly, I have a target on my back. Anytime you work off the clock you are hurting me and a lot of other drivers trying to do a honest days work.

But is ups being "honest" when they expect you to do 10.5-11.0 hours of work, within 9.5 hours, by you following "proper methods" and taking an hour lunch? Hardly.

What a crock of bs. Are your lives that empty and void that your day consists of ratting out a "brother" that happens to have a life outside of that brown box with wheels on it? Pathetic.
Are you one of those who would turn a blind eye if you knew a "brother" was stealing laptops? Pathetic.

This was done to ensure drivers get sufficient rest. I don't think you'd feel the same way if some tired lunchrunner ran over one of your children.

I've been doing this job the same way for well over 20 years now, inside the Capital Beltway with a 20 year safe driving award to prove it. Have always skipped my lunch simply because it was my choice to do so or not. Do your route the way you choose, I'll do mine....and I'll do it knowing damn well that dispatch will abuse me and the higher ups will care less about it. My supe's have families they want to get home to as well. Working together is far better than the us against them bs you all encourage.

So you let them rape you, and agree to be raped, just so all of you can get home a little early?

It is no longer your choice. Will you abide by the law or not??

Now that I have no choice, of course I will. My point was, while it was my choice I chose my choice. God Bless America unless your a Teamster that supports the socialists down at the DNC apparently.

I suppose some think that recognizing a "brother" who's doing something that will get him or others in a bad situation BEFORE it happens and try and prevent it is "ratting" him out also?

Sound like the union definition of "brother" is a bit selective.

Any one of you know this job is nothing like it used to be. Yeah, the runners have always been abused and always will be. The walkers are abused as well, and with a bulls eye on their backs... again, your choice. $32 bucks an hour for being a delivery boy still beats digging ditches for 10 or 12 bucks an hour.
