Shares of United Parcel Service Inc. sank 4.8% and FedEx Corp. dropped 4.7% in morning trade Tuesday, to lead all 20 of the Dow Jones Transportation Average’s components in losses, after Morgan Stanley analyst Ravi Shanker cut its price targets on the package deliverers, citing concerns over competition from Amazon.com Inc.’s Amazon Air. For that reason, the company is dangling a carrot – no, not the one on a snowman’s nose, more like rewards valued at up to $20 – to encourage U.S. consumers to try alternate delivery sites. Known as UPS Access Point® locations, they include nearly 9,000 pick-up locations, including The UPS Store® locations and local businesses across the U.S. – such as neighborhood delis, dry cleaners and flower shops. Shoppers can pick up deliveries when convenient to their schedules for no additional fee.
After 186 stops through Bloomington within 12 hours, Orlando Driver’s day is finished. First, the high-priority packages, then the larger ones, then it’s a free-for-all. It has been his routine for 36 years and counting.
Driver is a United Parcel Service delivery man. At 60 years-old, Driver walks Kirkwood Avenue nearly every day making deliveries. Over the years, some of the business owners he’s gotten to know have left, but Driver is still here.
“He really is the king of Kirkwood,” said Jay Wilkin, general manager of Tracks Music and Videos. “He knows what’s up.”
Being able to get out and see the same people for the last 15 to 20 years has been the best part of his job, Driver said. IU students whose parents were around when Driver first started his job have come up to him, saying their parents have talked about him and how nice he was.
A Calabasas homeowner’s Ring doorbell video captured the moments leading up to a UPS delivery driver being robbed and gunpoint by a hooded criminal Wednesday afternoon.
It happened around 1:30 pm near Liberty Bell and Magna Carta, shortly after the driver dropped off a package at Chris Olney’s house.
“Obviously a little scary for us, my wife came out to get the package he delivered to us and then just moments later he was robbed at gunpoint,” he said.
His security video captured part of the armed robbery.
A Baytown, Texas resident says she has video evidence of a UPS driver rummaging through her package. But UPS says the driver was actually trying to close the package, not open it.
Juliana Mattise told Chron.com she noticed something was wrong when she found her delivered package had already been opened on the porch.
When she checked surveillance video, she said it showed the UPS driver bending down near the box.
“You can hear it,” Mattise said. “You can hear him ripping open the tape off the box, rifling through the box, which was socks and crayons.”
