You smell that?
And two tier has been here before, at least for PTers.

UPS has two priorities next contract.

1. Lower top rate for new hires (two tier)

2. Get out of the defined pension and into a matching 401.

Whether this will happen is up to us.

Who says that's their top priority?

And now the starting wage for PT is less then the minimum wage in some states and cities or counties. Do you want to see the same thing happen to package car drivers?

Perhaps.

So in talking with a pretty savvy, seemingly pretty smart center manager, told me he believes the main purpose of Orion is so that if the union decides to strike again, they'll have the software in place to just hire off the streets for half of what they pay us, and then tell the union to take a hike eventually.. o asked where he got that from, and he said the next contract top rate FT driver pay will more then likely be cut by $7-$8 an hour unless you're grandfathered in because ups has to make up their losses somewhere. Something about they hardly show profit on shipping now, and they've been buying up other companies just to stay afloat right now.. anyone have any insight on this,?

Are you actually driving full-time yet?

If not, you will be one of the second tier drivers. Shoulda kept that Pep Boys gig.

Read the UPS news page. Orion touted to have saved $350 million this year. Orion works ONLY because we drivers as a whole fix it's foul-ups!! if you put scabs you will have to run 3x's the number of routes to get the work done and UPS could never hire and train that many in short order! BrownJake next time look your center manager in the eye and try not to laugh then tell him to actually read the quarterlies and get a clue what has been the mainstay of UPS profits!!

He can't be that smart. The quarterly report just came out yesterday.

U.S. domestic revenue increased 4.8 percent. Its U.S. domestic deliveries per day climbed 5.7 percent, driven by e-commerce. The company also reported its deferred air shipments jumped 10 percent and Next Day Air increased 5.9 percent.

As for Orion being developed to make replacing us easier, perhaps in part but I don't think that was the ultimate reason. They believe it does indeed save millions of miles corporate wide. Supposedly it is they report. It's not a conspiracy to replace us but surely this tech used today would come to be beneficial if the driver force needed quick replacing. Not just Orion, but even having EDD in place already greatly lessons the learning curve to our job compared to pre-EDD/DIAD days. At the '97 strike, we were just on the DIAD 2. I wasn't there but it sure had to be much more difficult to learn to run a route back then. Now with EDD/Orion and Google maps, I can run stop for stop blind with no learning time delay. They throw me out blind, I say no problem.

As for whether Orion is easier or harder to run without area knowledge it depends. Depends on the route and it depends on what part of day and different situations. EDD is typically easier because it's set up in a linear, in order type setup. Orion bounces you around and without area knowledge, you won't know that you're supposed to change directions or whatever it asks. At least it sets up the air run for those that don't know an area even if you have to skip the grounds it may sprinkle in.

The starting rate for PTers ($10.00) is less than the minimum wage for federal contractors ($10.15, and likely to rise in January). Even worse, UPS deducts the difference from your raises. And they wonder why people are quitting left and right.

We keep talking about the upcoming 2-tier driver rates as if it is a done deal but really it's pure speculation, is it not? It seems like it was born hear on BC and repeated enough to make it fact. It's not like we have heard it directly from UPS or the union so why are we making this assumption? It's as if we as drivers are admitting we make "too much" based on market conditions and therefore up and coming drivers simply cannot make what we make.

Heard directly from Ken H.

Whether we give it to them is up to us.
