A few things have been on my mind lately about this place we call work. Our center manager has previously stated "drivers are forbidden to take a lunch when they have helpers." He also said "I don't feel like paying helpers for taking a lunch." "Tell them if they are hungry, to eat a sandwich for 5 minutes in between stops." Most drivers in my center would meet their helpers around 11:30AM to 12:00PM. Helpers could stay with their drivers for 5 hours up to 8 hours during the highest volume weeks. That means that they would be on the truck until 5PM to 8PM. Now according to union contract, drivers are allotted to take a lunch between the forth and sixth hour. My question is how can a driver take his/her lunch without their helper taking a lunch as well. Helpers aren't qualified to drive the package cars and deliver on their own. Should helpers load a dolly up with parcels and walk up and down hills in the snow while you enjoy a cheesesteak? Or does this center manager want our drivers to work 10 or 12 hour straight without taking a lunch or break? Is this the center manager instructing employees to go against what the agreed contract states or is it my imagination? Has anybody else heard anything like this before??
