I never call if I’m running late. Most of the time, management will panic and cover my route, then I go play golf instead! Easy peezy!

My friend worked at a company that had a "late line". Basically the company pays a third party, this third party is called when you're going to not show or are sick for the day, late, etc. Could work at UPS given all the BS supervisors give when you know you're not coming in.

Joking aside it's really not a bad idea, if you get sick or have a family emergency the last thing you want to be doing is arguing with some bozo about why you're not coming in.
