No. What I meant was;

Taking the time to campaign, and forking up the money to do it.

You can't win a Local election by standing at the gate handing out fliers

that were printed on your home computer.

We do hats, shirts, pens, buttons, signs, cookouts, home mailers.... etc.

All paid for by the slate members running for office. A $30,000 budget

is a good starting point. We even rented a motor home for 3 months, to

travel to various Barns (companies) and campaign for days at a time.

In the final weeks, we did 24/7.

Ragtag TDU people (in my Local) could never keep up.

They weren't committed to the investment of time or money.

Trying to run down your competition with mere words, never works.

Members don't like the negativity.

So, there you go. My proven method of winning a Local Union election.

@Bubblehead.... that freebie is just for you. ;)

Time and money, is all it takes.

(with a positive message)

I got ya. It was the condensed post initially.

And we could add: make sure the attorney from the joint council who oversees it isn't biased/crooked.
Not a "positive message" but a freebie for new challengers.

My Local, hires an outside agency to conduct Local Union elections.

@ $20,000 a pop. That's what pisses me off about TDU.

They waste the members Dues money.... on an election they can't win.

With that option of "an election they can't win". I guess we should just skip USA presidental elections when the poles are showing a land slide months before the election huh?

I'm mind blown at some of the things you old guard guys actually say.

You completed all that.... and still lost ?

Call me a "doubting Thomas".
Actually did it your way the first time, for a Trustee position with the incumbent group.

T-shirts, water bottles, and various trinkets.
Multiple glossy mailings and heavy front gate campaigning....and lost.

Second time, I ran for Vice President with a shoe string budget, no t-shirts, a few trinkets, heavy social media blitz, and one mail out.
Very hit and miss hand billing at the gates.
Half of my slate won, while I lost by 12 votes.
In hindsight, it was a blessing.
Turned down a subsequent offer to be appointed as BA three times.
Many people think turning down that opportunity was a mistake, but I don't regret it for a second, as I can't be a part of how they run that Hall.

Third time, I threw together a slate to "screw the pooch" for Sam B, didn't spend a dime or any time and lost, but so did Sam.

So yes, I have been there and done that....and then some "Thomas".

If there is a next time, I will do what I always try to do, listen and learn from as many people as I can, merging the best ideas from each, in the shadows of past failures and successes.

Start now. Don't talk to people about the election or how bad your perception of the local is. Just talk to them.
