FedEx Express Peak (on topic!!)

You’re right, it’s probably better to have a large network of small companies that are nimble and responsive to specific geographies and labor markets.
With inefficiency built right in to the DNA? No.

There was a time, years ago, when station management had the flexibility to implement procedures that made sense for their market, and which other stations could replicate locally, if they were applicable. Thornton made the system inflexible, because he was too much a control freak to delegate any authority to those who had boots on the ground. The result is a system that is so dysfunctional that in order to make a profit, it has to squeeze it out of their employees benefits.

But, hey, no union that we would be totally incapable of coping with!

That's a WIN, right?

Putting Matt Thornton in charge was one of the biggest mistakes the company ever made for the reasons above. The guy has no understanding of how to properly service customers and has no idea of how to work with people. He’s done irreparable damage and is unwilling to change (wherever he is now.)

That would be incorrect.

Redundancies are not efficient.

Your rogue companies are destroying the FedEx brand as we speak.

The UPS model supports high wages. Your 'business' is anachronistic and would be relegated to the waste heap. I understand your self-serving position.

The UPS model has a lot of waste built in. They don’t need to pay the wages they do across the country. They could get the same quality of work for a much lower labor cost in many markets.

Do you want to go to the next union meeting at the local hall and repeat that?

Just like every other idea FedEx management comes up with, the implementation is one dimensional. Past that point, solutions are reactive and dysfunctional. Some day, maybe they’ll design a plan that is complete from start to finish, and doesn’t dissolve into chaos because there is no follow through.
You guys are free to step up with your contributions.

They had that flexibility before and during Thornton. He's long gone... and they still have it.

It’s reality. UPS wastes resources paying workers in boofoo Alabama the same as workers in NYC. The labor markets are very different, workers are cheaper where the cost of living is cheaper. That’s not really debatable.
Then why don’t they just offer 12 dollars an hour. Because no one would apply. The same reason people get hired at express and leave when they find out they won’t top out. There’s easier jobs

They have a union that negotiated a national contract. That reality doesn’t change the fact that it’s a waste of the company’s resources.

Yet there's Ground, with guys getting paid half of what a UPS guy gets and nowhere near the benefits, and people apply!

If anyone is real horny for cheap labor, it would be you. Why don’t you go down there and recruit?
